Agent Field Report: AI Trading Bot Free — Week of 2026-09-16

Last week, we set out to prove a point: can a robust AI trading bot be deployed for free, from scratch, and deliver actionable signals within its first week? We started with zero configuration, leveraging only the free tier of Assistant Hub and a local Ollama instance. The result: our BTC sentiment agent fired three alerts, two of which proved correct, generating a hypothetical 4.7% gain from the successful long position. This wasn't a fluke; it was a demonstration of accessible, intelligent automation.

The Setup

Our objective was straightforward: deploy an AI trading bot free of charge, focusing on Bitcoin (BTC/USDT) sentiment. We chose a simple yet potent combination: the Crypto Fear & Greed Index (F&G) as our primary data source, interpreted by a local instance of Ollama running Llama 3 8B. This setup meant we weren't incurring any API costs for data or external LLM inference, keeping the entire operation within the free tier's parameters.

The agent, named "Sentiment Scout 001," was configured on Monday, September 16, 2026, at 09:00 UTC. The entire deployment process, from selecting the F&G template to linking our local Ollama endpoint and defining the alert conditions, took us just under 9 minutes. The core logic tasked Ollama with assessing the F&G index hourly. If the index consistently indicated "Extreme Fear" (below 20) for a sustained period, the agent would issue a "Buy BTC" alert. Conversely, a prolonged "Extreme Greed" (above 75) would trigger a "Sell BTC" alert.

What Happened

The first alert arrived on Wednesday, September 18, 2026, at 14:15 UTC. The F&G Index had been hovering between 15 and 18 ("Extreme Fear") for over 12 hours. At 14:15 UTC, with BTC trading at $62,150, Sentiment Scout 001 issued a "Buy BTC" alert. The market reaction was swift; over the next 36 hours, BTC climbed steadily, reaching $65,070 by Friday morning, September 20, 2026, at 02:00 UTC—a 4.7% increase. This was our first correct signal.

Our second alert came on Saturday, September 21, 2026, at 09:30 UTC. The F&G Index had surged to 81, indicating "Extreme Greed," after BTC had made a strong push towards $66,500. Sentiment Scout 001 sent a "Sell BTC" alert at $66,480. However, BTC continued its ascent, peaking at $67,800 later that day before pulling back. While the agent correctly identified an overheated market, the timing was premature. By Sunday, September 22, 2026, at 18:00 UTC, BTC was trading at $66,120, only a slight dip from the alert price. This was a technically correct sentiment but a poorly timed signal for a short entry.

The third and final alert of the week landed on Sunday, September 22, 2026, at 23:45 UTC. The F&G Index had dipped back to 25. Sentiment Scout 001, observing a sentiment shift from "Greed" to "Fear" within 48 hours, issued another "Buy BTC" alert at $65,980. This proved to be a solid entry point; by Monday morning, BTC had recovered to $66,800, confirming the agent's signal.

The Conditions That Made It Work

The success of the "Buy" alerts stemmed from a clear, macro-level sentiment reversal identified by the Fear & Greed Index. When the index consistently signals "Extreme Fear" (below 20), it often coincides with local bottoms or periods of significant undervaluation. Our agent's logic was to wait for this extreme condition to persist for at least 6 hours, ensuring it wasn't a fleeting dip. Ollama's role was to consolidate this temporal data and confirm the "Extreme Fear" status, reducing noise. The subsequent market rallies after the first and third "Buy" alerts demonstrated the efficacy of buying
